A collection of Korean font designs that decorated records, movie posters, advertisements, packaging and signs from 1950 to 1989

This book collects representative cases of Korean font design from the 1950s to the 1980s. It is a revised and expanded version of "한글레터링자료집 1950–1985" published in 2014. Compared with the first edition, the revised version has three major changes:

First, about 100 newly discovered font designs were added. After removing 315 works of less importance from the first edition, a total of 389 design works selected from record and movie titles were included this time, which is a significant increase in the proportion.

Secondly, the time range of coverage has been extended from the original 1950–1985 to 1989, allowing readers to more clearly see the transformation of the Korean visual environment to modernization under national events such as the growth of the advertising industry and the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Finally, we provide additional explanations for each font design. In addition to explaining the technical characteristics of each font, we also focus on the social and economic background in which it is located; and as much as possible, we attach "original samples" of these fonts in actual use to help readers understand the design context more specifically.

In short, this collection of materials can be said to be an expanded and deepened version of the first edition, presenting a more complete and convincing history of the evolution of Korean font design.

This book can be said to be a record of the most prosperous period of Korean font design and an important collection of historical data. We hope that it can not only bring practical inspiration and stimulation to contemporary visual designers, but also help people understand the past that has made today possible.
