〈록 ' 셔리〉 is a black comedy full of dreams and love performed on paper. This legendary independent magazine came out in 2012 and published 5 issues in 4 years. The magazine demonstrated a new attitude towards life for readers - the fun limited by poverty, such as how to grill pork belly in an abandoned house, how to spend a week on 10,000 won, a cooking competition that only costs 3,000 won, how to make cheap popsicles into high-end smoothies ... These imaginative plans are unprecedented and so exciting that people want to keep reading page after page.
The magazine also plays with many high-quality advertisements and brand images, when BALENCIAGA becomes " BALENCIAGANG ", uses IKEA catalogs to display park sports equipment, and puts on the unrefined daily SANP on the IG page...〈록 ' 셔리〉 is just as its name suggests, adding Luxury to Rock to become "Rock'xury", using the spirit of rock to face the modern society with the gap between the rich and the poor.
This magazine was originally a homework of 현영석 when he was in college. When he first founded the magazine, he hoped that even people without money would not be ashamed of poverty and live in the present. Unexpectedly, after the magazine came out, it attracted a lot of attention in the independent publishing industry in Korea. The small-scale printing of "록 ' 셔리" has been out of print for a long time. Finally, in 2024 , Storage Book and Film bookstore integrated the 5 issues that have been issued plus the latest 1 issue, a total of 6 issues of the magazine into one volume and republished it.
I read all 6 issues in one go. It was refreshing, romantic and heartbreaking. This empathetic magazine for the Korean MZ generation is well worth collecting. You can appreciate its fun by reading it over and over again.
