The wind smells of salt in the air. On Jeju Island, this is a story about a dog and me...
"Your time is faster than mine. That's why, Darrow, we should live together without regrets."
There was a saying circulating on the Internet: "Once you have experienced the unconditional love given by a dog, you cannot live without that love." Even if you have been heartbroken because of saying goodbye to your beloved dog, one day we will welcome a new life and start a new day all over again. Perhaps it is because the warmth of this love is irreplaceable.
<너의시간은나의시간보다빠르지만> is a gentle illustrated essay that records the encounter and healing between a puppy named "Daro" who was lost and wandering in "Jungdari" on Jeju Island, and a woman who had been in a blank life for a long time and didn't know how to move forward, and spent more than a year in chaos on Jeju Island.
One day in early May, while helping out at a guesthouse in Jeju, the woman heard about a stray puppy in a nearby village. The white mixed breed dog had been around for about a month, and was so thin that its ribs were visible, and it was so hungry that it was heartbreaking. During the rainy season in April, it spent one day hiding under the eaves of this store, then another day under the eaves of that store, and was later taken in and taken care of temporarily by a couple who worked at a hair salon.
At that time, the woman had a hard time even living alone. Although she said, "I really can't keep a dog," she was always thinking about the child in her heart. A few days later, she came to the hair salon with a beautiful courtyard and wanted to see the puppy.
Just like that, in an atmosphere that was a little sudden and she didn't even know how she got involved, she took the dog home. From that day on, a small but significant change quietly unfolded.
Maybe one day, you will leave me first, leaving me alone with a broken heart. Because of this, many people are reluctant to welcome a new life. But because of this, we know more clearly that those lives bring us deep comfort. Just "existence" can soothe a heart and rebuild a collapsed will.
This book is a healing journey about a helpless woman and a stray dog. Those insignificant but precious daily moments are moving.
The illustrations in the book are drawn by graphic writer 윤나리, who won the 5th Anthony Brown and Hannah Bartolin Picture Book Award for her picture book "Mountain Aunt". Like the author of this book, she also adopted a stray dog "Poca". Poca is a large dog born in a shelter. It was born after a pregnant female dog was brought into the shelter. Because of this resonance and connection, the two creators decided to donate part of the proceeds from this book to the stray animal rescue group "더불어공존 (Symbiosis Journey)".
I sincerely hope that through this book, I can convey the comfort brought by little lives and the preciousness of time to every reader.
